Sayonara "Februany"

I am happy to report that Matt 2.0 is still going strong, and I don’t expect that change. I am starting to enjoy this exercising thing. Do I enjoy the act of running? No...not yet. I think that day will come.

I have completed 8 weeks of the C25K program and Week 9 should start tonight. When I began this journey two months ago, I struggled through running for 90 seconds. This past week called for three 28 minute runs, and I made it through each one. It wasn’t easy by any stretch, but I made it nonetheless.

What a difference 8 weeks makes.

My weight loss has slowed quite a bit over the last month.  I lost 17 pounds in January and 3 in February…or should I say “Februany”. In January I was very disciplined when it came to what I ate for lunch. The same can’t be said for February. Thanks to my boss’ son-in-law (Jared from Subway) and his employer's month long special where every sub was $5, I found myself eating at Subway far too much. Now you might think based on Jared’s extreme weight loss from eating the sometimes delicious, most of the time not-so-satisfying subs, that Subway would have been a good option for me (much better than the Taco Bell I had eaten most of the time prior to my decision to change my habits a couple of months ago). That may be true if I had been disciplined enough to stick to the 6” subs, but I wasn’t. The foot long buffalo chicken all but reached out and grabbed me each time I walked into the restaurant.

I worked out just as much in February as the month before, but that didn’t translate on the scale (the delicious strawberry cake the kids and I made for Sara probably didn't help either). I guess I could be in the position where I gained weight, so I am happy that 3 more pounds came off last month.

But now March is here. And you know what that brings, my first 5K. As a matter of full disclosure, I do not-so-vividly remember running a 5k when I was a teenager, but that was a long time ago, so please allow me to consider this to be my first.

I haven’t registered for the race yet. I am having a hard to getting myself to pay someone so that I can run 3.1 miles. That is unheard of.  But I am going to do it.

If you happen to be around downtown Cincinnati or Newport on the Levee on the morning of March 12, don’t blink or you might miss me as my blazing speed is carrying me across the Purple People Bridge towards the finish line. Joking of course, as I am just looking to finish, worrying about time will come later.

  1. Yay yay yay! Register for that puppy, Matt! It'll be fun! I forgot to tell you that it's a really laid back race. So much so that there's no timing. So get familiar with the stopwatch on your Touch or wrangle up and app or actual watch to record your split times. =)

    See you there!

  2. My husband and I are going to do the same walk! We are going to drive up to Union on Friday night so that we can be a part of it (in memory of a friend of mine who died 3 years ago). We may be bringing Asa with us because he might be too much for my dad to handle along with the 3 other boys!
